Chapter Ten

When we pulled up to his house, I could understand why he was nervous. I could feel my face heat up, and my heart pound quicker and quicker with every step. Come on, Haley. This is just Sid. No reason to be worried. When we got inside, he turned on a light right inside the door. “Do you want a tour or something?” he asked. “Uh, no. That’s ok,” I answered. “Oh…alright. Well, do you want to watch a movie or…?” he asked, awkwardly. “Oh shut up,” I said, grabbing a fistful of his t-shirt and pulling him closer to me. The next second his lips were on mine. I slipped my fingers under his shirt, and watched him flinch. “Your hands are freezing,” he complained. I laughed and pressed my hands harder into his back, which made him actually smile. We were in mid-kiss when his phone started vibrating. At first he ignored it, but I told him to get it. “What’s up Flower?” he asked. I could hear talking on the other end, but couldn’t figure out what he was saying. “We forgot your friends,” he said, holding the phone away from his face. “They don’t have a ride.” “I completely forgot about that,” I said, laughing, “Tell Marc to figure something out.” He conveyed the message and hung up before Flower could say anything else. After about five minutes of making out, I found myself in what looked to be Sidney’s room. We sort of toppled over onto the bed and he began kissing my neck, making me shudder. “I wish you would have worn looser pants,” he said, attempting pulling mine down. I started unbuttoning his shirt in between kisses. He unzipped my sweatshirt and ripped off my tank top. I worked on his belt, and finally slipped off his pants. Here we were. Laying on a bed. Going completely against our morals. This is love. I said to myself. “Sid, n-no sex before…marriage,” I managed to gasp. “Shut up,” he said fiercely. I laughed, a quick breath. I shuddered as he stood up, taking me with him. He got on the bed and leaned up against the headboard, I got on shakily and straddled his hips. I wrapped my arms around his neck and he wrapped his around my back. My fingers grasped at his hair. “Am I going too fast?” he whispered. I didn’t answer, but pulled him closer and shut him up with a kiss. I gripped his muscular arms. This went on for about another half hour, and in the end we were tired, but still had our virginity. He gave me a t-shirt and shorts to sleep in, and I fell asleep, nuzzled up beside him, more comfortable then I had been in a long time.

The next Morning, I woke up to kisses all over my face and neck. “Morning,” he said, not sounding tired. It was barely even light out, so I smacked him in the arm and rolled over. “Get up, lazy. I have to be at the arena in a half hour,” he said, hitting me with a pillow. “Well what the hell does that have to do with me getting up?” I asked, grabbing the pillow out of his hands and throwing it on the floor. “Uh, because you’re coming with me,” he said like it should be obvious. “Sidney! It’s 4:30! In the morning!” I yelled. “Morning skate’s at 5,” he said, winking at me. “UUUGGGHHH,” I said, getting up. I heard him laughing as he walked into the bathroom. I brushed my hair and teeth, and I wore my jeans from the night before, a gray RBK sweatshirt that Sid let me borrow, and brown Uggs. I could barely keep my eyes open as we drove in the semi-darkness to Mellon. When we walked down towards the rink, I could see four girls’ heads sitting in the first row. I was instantly bombarded by them, but I couldn’t tell if they were mad or not because they were yelling at me and smiling at the same time. “I want details! Don’t leave anything out, Haley I swear to God!” Leah said, and the others all nodded their agreement. “Relax, guys!” I said laughing. “Hey, listen here buddy. I’m an Italian from New Jersey and I know how to fight. Haley is my best friend and if you hurt her, I’ll hurt you,” Riley said, pointing her finger at Sid. “Alright Snooki,” he said, laughing and putting his hands up in fake surrender. He gave me a quick kiss before heading down onto the ice. “Don’t hold back,” Morgan said, leaning forward. “What do you wanna know?” I asked, smiling. “Did you sleep together?!” Three of them shouted at the same time. I paused, “…No,” I said slowly. “Bullshit!” Riley yelled, causing a few people to look our way. “Guys, leave her alone. She’ll tell you if she wants to,” Megan said, giving me a look which I knew meant tell me or I’ll kill you. “Ah, alright. We didn’t exactly ‘sleep together,’” I said, choosing my words. “What do you mean ‘exactly’?” Morgan asked. “Well…we didn’t go the whole way. It was close though. I don’t know, I think that’s enough details. You can imagine whatever you want,” I said. “DAMN,” Leah said. “I’m pretty sure Kris Letang is the sexiest thing on this earth,” she said, exhaling slowly, shaking her head. “Definitely,” I laughed, glad for the change of topic. “Oh, boy. Jordan’s so hot I’m surprised he doesn’t melt the ice,” Morgan said. “Marc-Andre is mine,” Megan chimed in. “I get Max, then,” Riley smirked. They all looked over at me, expecting me to say something about Sid I guess. When they saw that I was just sitting there staring at him, Megan said it for me, “She’s got Sid.”

Chapter Nine

“What the hell is she doing?!” Leah screeched. Morgan and Riley were just standing there with their mouth gaping open. Megan, on the other hand was practically on the floor laughing. By this point, Sidney and I had broken apart, and he was laughing too. “You didn’t tell them?” he smiled. “No, she didn’t,” Riley said, fake-glaring at me. “Don’t you think this might have been…I don’t know, something worth mentioning?” she cocked her head to the side. I laughed, “Well now you know, right? No big deal.” “Oh, right, no big deal. No big deal that you were just making out with quite possibly the best and most famous hockey player of our time?” she snapped. “You mean Sid?” I asked, smiling. “Mmmhm,” she said in a pretty ghetto way. “Megan, can you believe this?” Leah asked, her mouth still slightly open. Megan looked up from the chair she was sitting in. “Oh, nah she told me like two years ago,” she shrugged. Riley slapped her forehead. “For God’s sake…how long has this been going on?” Sid and I looked at each other and shrugged, “About…8, 9 years, would you say?” he asked, nonchalantly. “Sounds about right to me,” I nodded. We looked back at Riley in unison. “Sidney fucking Crosby…” she trailed off. “My middle name is actually Patrick. Close though. Anyway, you guys know Marc-Andre Fleury? He’s having a party tonight if you guys are interesting in coming. I’m warning you, though, avoid being alone with Max Talbot. The guy is dangerous,” Sidney said. “I guess I can flip out on you later,” Riley said to me, as we made our way to Sidney’s car.

When we got there, it was already packed. Fleury’s house was colossal, complete with a full-sized ice rink in the backyard. He was there to greet us when we walked in, man-hugging Sidney, then looking down at our interlocked hands said, “You must be Haley,” with that electric smile of his. “Yep, and you are…?” I asked jokingly. He looked at Sid confused. “She’s kidding, Flower,” Sid said and dragged me through the crowd of people. I looked back at my friends, and they were all showing some sort of sign of approval, so I went with him. “Hey, you’re hot!” I heard a husky, French voice say. “Thanks Max, not too bad yourself,” I laughed. “Oh…you’re Haley,” he said, sounding disappointed. “Yeah, I am. Is that a problem?” I asked, smiling. “Actually, yeah. But I’ll get over it. Did you bring any hot friends?” he asked. “Yeah, but the blonde one is taken so don’t try to hard with her, she’ll get mad,” I answered. “DAMN. I mean, I’m not jealous…” and then he walked away. I met a few other guys, like Jordan Staal, Kris Letang, Tyler Kennedy, and Evgeni Malkin. After a few hours, I noticed Sidney was getting kind of nervous, he was running his fingers through his hair a lot and fidgeting more than usual. “What’s wrong?” I asked, burying my face in his shoulder. He took a deep breath, “Noth-” “Don’t say nothing. I know you too well,” I interrupted. “I’m just…nervous, I guess,” he answered. “About what?” I asked. “Well…I mean, you’re in Pittsburgh. I’m in Pittsburgh. Our parents are not even in the same country as us, I have a house…do you know where this is going…?” he said slowly. “Aw, big bad hockey star is afwaid of a girl,” I cooed, running my fingers through his hair. He didn’t even smile, “No, not afraid. I just promised you it would be special and I don’t know if I can live up to any expectations this…girl…may have,” he said, turning a little bit red. “Sid,” I said harshly, “as long as you weren’t lying about not being with any other girls, I have just as little experience as you. Don’t worry about it, I don’t have any expectations because I’ve never done it before.” This made him smile a little bit, “Let’s get out of here.”

Chapter Eight

[This one is a lot of me explaining things, but I felt it was sort of neccessary]

In the end, we decided that I would stay at Penn State, and then after the year was over, I would transfer to Pitt. It was going to be a tough year, after spending two months with him, then not getting to see him at all. But at least this time there was a light at the end of the tunnel. I’ll admit, I cried a little when he left. We hugged for about 80 years before I finally released my death-grip. After I got back to Penn State, I quickly fell back into my routine. Get up early, spend all day in class, then go downtown for a little while with my friends. That’s right, you heard me…friends. Megan, Riley, Leah and Morgan. All five of us were almost opposites. Megan was tall, thin, and tan, with straight brown hair that made it just past her shoulders. Her eyes were a light green, and she was the wild and flirtatious one of the group. Riley, was short and muscular, with wavy, almost black hair that made it about halfway down her back. Her eyes were a dark brown, and she looked like a Kardashian…acted like one too. Leah was about my height, and had beautiful straight red hair, and light gray eyes. On the surface, she seems like a nice girl, but once you get to know her…just hope you’re on her good side. Morgan was tall and thin, and had flawless pale skin and eyes that reminded me of sea turtles (as weird as that sounds, you have to see it to know what I mean). Her wavy blonde hair cascaded down her back, making her look like some sort of fairy. Her looks matched her personality, which was calm, easy-going, and always out to find the good in people. She never had a bad word to say about anyone, she was oddly observant, and could usually guess what I was thinking about. I, on the other hand, had straight, layered, dark brown hair that just brushed my shoulder-blades. My eyes were a deep blue color, and I had a few freckles sprinkled across my nose, which I hated. I wasn’t tall, but I wasn’t short (about 5’ 6”), and kept a pretty good tan even in the winter months. The five of us were tighter than spandex, and I honestly started loving them. I hate to say it, but I finally started having a life when I was 20 years old. Megan and I were still roommates, and so were Leah and Riley. Morgan lived in an apartment close-by with her boyfriend Colby. Megan was still the only one who knew about Sidney, but I’m almost positive that Riley saw the pictures of he and I through the years when she was standing in the door of me and Megan’s dorm. I took them down the next day, not wanting to explain my situation. Except to Megan, who practically could recite every word Sidney and I had ever said to each other because I told her so much about it. It’s hard to keep that kind of thing to yourself.

Although they helped keep my mind on other things, Sidney was still permanently etched into my mind. Especially at times when I would see Morgan and Colby exchange a quick kiss, or a hug, or even when the word love was mentioned. Leah, who was originally from Pittsburgh, surprised us all with tickets to a Pens game in December. Apparently, her dad was close friends with Dan Bylsma so she got them for free. “Guys, I think it would be cool if we could all wear different jerseys,” Morgan said. In the end, Megan would be wearing Fleury, Riley in Letang, Leah sporting Staal, Morgan wearing Crosby…and me in Talbot. When Morgan called wearing the Crosby jersey, Megan looked at me and couldn’t control her laughter. I rolled my eyes, but laughed too. Since we were representing a lot of guys on the team, they put us on the Jumbotron a few times. The highlight of the whole game though, was seeing Sidney. Maybe not up close, but watching him skate, and knowing that we were in the same building, made my heart literally beat 2o times faster. After the game, we were sitting in the hotel, thinking about going out somewhere. Finally, I couldn’t take it anymore. I excused myself down the hall, and dialed Sid’s number. He picked up on the first ring. “I love you,” was his greeting, which made me smile. “Are you busy tonight?” I asked. “Uh, I have a party at Max’s. Why?” he asked. “Well, I’m in Pittsburgh. I went to the game tonight,” I answered slowly. “Plans cancelled,” he said. I laughed, “You don’t have to do that. Have a good time, maybe I’ll see you before we leave tomorrow,” but I was desperately hoping that he wouldn’t listen to me. “No, no way! I’ve been trying to plan a time when I could come to State College to see you, but so far I’ve been busy just about every day. Are you staying at a hotel?” he asked. “Yeah…uh the Doubletree right near Mellon,” I said. “Oh I know exactly where that is. I’ll pick you up in like an hour,” he said, happily. “Do you mind if some of my friends come?” I asked. “Your what?” he asked jokingly. “Shut up,” I laughed, and hung up the phone. “Guys! Get ready, I have a surprise coming for you in about an hour,” I said, entering the hotel room. None of them asked questions, but I could tell they had no idea what was going on. It was the longest hour of my life, but when I got a text saying that he was in the lobby, I couldn’t help but smile like crazy. The elevator seemed to take hours rather than seconds. But when the doors opened, and I saw him, it felt like a million bricks were lifted off my shoulders. I don’t even remember walking over to him, but next thing I knew I was in his arms, kissing him like never before.

Chapter Seven

That is how I fell in love with Sidney Crosby, for about the third time. Although my mind told me that it was a bad idea, I couldn’t help but completely lose myself to him. Things went back to normal for the most part. I was definitely a lot happier with him here.

But, every time I felt that happiness, there was also dark thoughts looming in the back of my mind. Sidney was leaving again towards the end of summer, then I would be back to my ridiculous depression. This time, though, I thought it would be even worse.

I can’t count how many times “What was I thinking?” or “I shouldn’t have done this,” coursed through my head. I tried to make the most of it, though. His parents were happy to see us together again. My mom, not so much. “I thought you were just starting to get over him,” she said, her mouth a thin line. “That boy is so selfish, I’m telling you…”

I shook my head, “Why Mom?! Why? Because he came back to his hometown for the summer? That makes him selfish?” I was furious. “No, Haley,” she said quietly, but I could hear the anger in her voice.

“Because he just will not let you move on. I had to deal with your moping around since he left, and now it’s going to happen again as soon as he leaves for Pittsburgh and forgets about you. Just like last time. It’s not healthy,” she shook her head.

“Did you ever think maybe we aren’t letting go of each other because we don’t want to?” I asked, my voice practically oozing venom. “You don’t want to!” she yelled. “Sidney, on the other hand, is perfectly fine with just leaving you in the dust to go bask in the glory of his damn NHL career!”

“You’re ridiculous,” I said. “Am I? Or are you starting to realize that I’m right?” she asked. “But you aren’t right! I love him, he loves me. That’s all we need for right now. And just so you know, Mom, it was my choice to break up, not his. So don’t go blaming it on him,” I said. “Honey, I’m just trying to help you. I don’t want to see you get hurt again,” she said, softer now. “I know. But sometimes…you just have to let me make my own decisions.”

The rest of the summer went by much quicker than I wanted it to. It was a lot like that first summer that Sid and I started becoming close. We spent all of our time together, and everything was how it should be.

With about a week until Sidney was supposed to leave, those dark, depressing thoughts crept back into my head, about 20 times worse than before. That evening, at about 6, Sidney and I went down to the lake near our houses.

There were only three other people, but they left about 15 minutes after we got there. We sat on the dock for a long time, just talking. Mostly about the past. But then we started talking about what I knew was on our minds the most.

“I’ve been thinking a lot about…what happens next,” he said. I nodded, for him to go on. “I don’t think I’d be able to handle what happened last time,” he said. “But I don’t really know what choices we have,” he finished.

“Well, Penn State isn’t that far away from Pittsburgh. We could make it work if we tried. I know you’re really busy, though. Maybe we could just have a summer thing,” I suggested. “That doesn’t work for me. It’s harder than you think…leaving you for that long,” he said. “I know exactly how hard it is,” I mumbled.

Chapter Six

As promised, that summer, Sid came to Cole Harbour. I had seen him around a few times, but usually tried to avoid him. It’s not that I didn’t want to talk him, I did. It’s just that…I wouldn’t know what to say.

Every time I saw him, my stomach felt like someone had wedged a knife in between my ribs. One day, Bridget and I were sitting in Worthings, a great place for burgers and fries. We had been sitting there for about ten minutes when the door opened again. Just out of habit, I looked over to see who it was. “Shit,” I said when I saw those familiar golden brown eyes.

Bridget looked at me with a smirk on her face. “Hey Sid!” she said, waving at him. I closed my eyes and hid my face in my hands. “Hi Bridget,” he smiled. “Haley,” he nodded. “Haley,” Bridget said. “You remember Sidney don’t you?” she asked. “Oh my God, Bridget. Shut up,” I hissed.

Sid smiled awkwardly. “Well, I have to get home. I’ll see you two later,” Bridge said. “If you’re leaving then I have to, too,” I said. “You don’t…have to,” Sidney said. After Bridget was gone, Sid sat down in her place. “Uh, how have you been?” he asked.

“Eh, alright. How bout you?” I asked. “Uh, ya know. Pretty good, I guess. It’s been different,” he said. I nodded. “Yeah, I know,” I said. “Not much going on around here?” he asked. “Nothing worth talking about, no. So how’s the NHL?” I replied. He nodded, “It’s great for the most part,” he said. “just kinda hard, having to keep a whole team going. Having a whole city disappointed when we lose. It’s a lot of pressure,” he finished.

“I bet,” I nodded. “I don’t mean to sound nosy or anything, but have you…been dating anyone? You don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to,” he said. I shook my head, “Not really. I’ve been on a few dates but it’s just too…weird. It’s not the same,” I said.

I can’t be sure, but I think I saw him relax a little. “Uh, you doing anything tonight?” he asked. I shook my head no. “Do you want to do something? I don’t know what, but I uh…just wanna catch up, you know?” he said. “Uh, yeah that’d be…sure.”

Sidney stopped at my house a little before 7. When he walked in, I could barely breathe. No joke. His hair was beautifully messy, and he was wearing light-wash jeans and a white polo. “Mom, I’ll be back in a few hours,” I said. She yelled something that sounded like “kay,” but I wasn’t paying attention.

Since Cole Harbour was pretty small, we decided to walk, instead of drive, to wherever he was taking me. For a second, it was like the first walk we had ever taken, all over again. But then he started talking. “I don’t mean to keep bringing this up, but were you telling the truth when you said you hadn’t really dated anyone?” he asked.

“Yeah,” I said. “How about you? Have you been seeing anyone?” I asked. He shook his head, “Nah, not really. I’ve been too busy. I went on like two dates since I moved to Pittsburgh,” he said. “I’ve been on like two dates since you moved to Pittsburgh, too,” I said, and he laughed.

“Good,” he said quietly. Then, something in me snapped. I don’t know why I did this, but I couldn’t help it. Flinging my arms around his neck, I practically attacked his lips. He was a little surprised at first, but then he wrapped his arms around me and kissed me back.

This kiss was different than the other ones. It felt almost desperate, like it was going to be the last one. It felt like there were fireworks going off in between us. After we broke apart, I just looked at his face. Making my way from his light brown eyes all the way down to his perfect lips. “I missed you,” was all he said. And of course, that led to his poor, gorgeous lips being mauled again.

Chapter Five

[You won’t be hearing much about Sidney in the next few chapters, and I know that will annoy you. But I don’t think you can get the full effect of the rest of the story without a break from him.Well, actually you'll be hearing about him a lot, but not really seeing him]

“Haley, you’re being ridiculous. Brett Caswell is a very nice boy, and his family has always been so good to us,” Mom said. “No,” was all I said. “Yes,” she snapped.

“Why would I go out with him? I don’t even like him,” I said. “Oh come on! You can’t be in this dating slump for the rest of your life, Haley. I’m starting to get really worried about you. Hell, you don’t even smile anymore!” she said.

“Why the hell did you invite him over here telling him that I agreed to go out with him, when you never even told me about it?” I asked. “I knew I couldn’t get you to go with him if I didn’t,” she said. “Maybe because I don’t want to,” I growled.

“Do it,” she said, narrowing her eyes. I let out a quick breath. “If I do, will you please leave me alone about Sidney?” I asked. She shrugged, “Maybe.” So with that, I put on a pair or jeans, and a Crosby jersey that Bridget had gotten me as a joke. Not such a funny one in my opinion.

Somehow, though, I couldn’t push myself to throw it away, or even take it back. So it sat in the back of my closet. I tucked the front of it into my belt, and brushed through my hair before heading down to my living room. “Ready to go?” Brett asked, standing up.

“Nope,” I said. “Haley!” Mom said. I shrugged and followed him out to his car. Once he got in, he glanced down at my jersey. “You’re seriously wearing that?” he asked. “Let’s go Pens,” I said. “Why do you hate me?” he asked. I snorted. “Obviously I know you’re only interested in sex, that’s why.”

He looked confused. “Why do you think that?” He asked. “Maybe because every time Sidney and I passed you, you yelled something about him, as you call it, making my bed rock,” I said, stone-faced. “Aw, come on. That was last year, Haley. I’m not like that anymore,” he said. “Right,” I rolled my eyes.

Brett and I didn’t last long, obviously. Well…he’s no Sidney Crosby. Neither one of us were happy. I did feel sort of bad, being so pissy with him all the time, but oh well. After that summer was over, I went off to college at Penn State.

It was a long year, and not very enjoyable. I did meet a lot of new friends, which was nice. The only difference between me and, well, just about everyone else on the campus, was that I wasn’t interested with hooking up with anyone.

Like Sidney had said, he wanted it to be special. And I didn’t think it could be with anyone but him. Of course, I knew he had probably already been with dozens of girls, I still couldn’t do it. That’s why any relationship I had with a guy never lasted long after they realized I didn’t want any of that.

State College is pretty close to Pittsburgh, so I saw a lot of people wearing Penguins jerseys. Even my roommate, Megan, was a pretty big fan. I didn’t tell anyone about me and Sidney for a long time. I just wanted to get away from that for a while.

One night, though, Megan and I were watching the game in our dorm. “I bet Crosby’s even hotter in person,” she said. “He is,” I answered, without realizing. She didn’t think much of it. Later that night, we were talking about our hometowns. “I miss Bellwood,” she said. “I miss home too,” I said. “Where are you from again?” she asked. “Cole Harbour,” I answered.

Just as I said that, a reporter asked Sid if he had any plans for the summer. “Cole Harbour. I’m always home in the summer,” he answered. Megan looked at me. “Maybe you have a tiny bit of information you’d like to share with me?” she asked.

I smiled a little. “Do you know Sidney Crosby?” she asked. I shrugged, “Yeah.” Her mouth dropped. “Like…know, know? Or you just lived in the same town but you never really talked?” she asked. “It’s a small town. Everybody knows everybody,” I said.

“Were you close with him?” she asked, practically bouncing out of her seat. “Uh, yeah, I was. We were good friends,” I said. “Dude what do you mean ‘friends’?” she asked. “Ok, I’m just gonna tell you. I dated Sidney Crosby for five years,” I said, and felt my face burn up. She was sitting there shaking her head. “You’ve got to be shitting me,” she said.

Chapter Four

As senior year went by, I’m sure you’re getting tired of hearing this, but nothing much changed. Until, that is, Sidney got drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins. When he told me this, I was ecstatic. And then I realized. He was moving to Pittsburgh.

He would never have time for anything other than his team. But I couldn’t ruin this for him, so I did what I thought was best for both of us. “Sidney, I want you to know that I’m not doing this because I want to, but because I think I kind of have to,” I mumbled.

“I don’t think I want to hear this,” he said. “I wish you didn’t have to,” I said, “we can’t do this anymore. I don’t want you to have to choose between me and hockey, so I’m choosing for you. You’re gonna move to Pittsburgh, and you’re gonna show everyone how amazing you are. I don’t want you to have any other commitments besides your career. This is an amazing opportunity, Sid, and I’m not going to let myself ruin it for you.”

He shook his head. “That doesn’t make sense.” “I love you,” I said. “So why do I have to choose between you and hockey? Why can’t I have both?” he asked. “Sidney, once you get to Pittsburgh you’re going to forget all about me. And then…I’m going to get mad at you for that. I just want to do this now, so that we can go our separate ways as friends and not despise each other. Trust me, it’s hard for me too,” I said.

I tried to stop the tears from coming, but they came out anyway. He wrapped his arms around me, and I buried my face in his muscular shoulder. And then without another word, I walked away.

That was the last time I talked to Sidney. Well, for a few years at least. It was the hardest time in my life, to be honest. It wasn’t uncommon for me to go a day or more without even the slightest hint at a smile.

I know, you think I’m a ridiculous whiny baby. But Sidney was my best friend; he was my love. He was…my everything. Since the time I was eight years old, I had been so wrapped up in him that I could barely think about anything else. And that didn’t change after he left.

I still thought about him just as much as I did before, only now I couldn’t see him every day to ease my overworking mind. Not to mention, you couldn’t turn on a radio or TV without hearing his name. I watched every Penguins game, and saw him make the transition into stardom, which I knew was going to happen.

I knew I had done what was best for us. But still, in the back of my mind, I regretted it. We loved each other, maybe we could have made it work. Where I was, he was. I really didn’t have many other friends except him, and the ones I did have got annoyed with me because I never made any time for them.

Honestly, I know this sounds like every other teenager in “love,” but really it was so much more than that. It takes two special people to make something last as long as we had, and there’s no doubt in my mind that it could have been much longer if we wanted it to. Many nights, especially in the first year, I cried myself to sleep. In short, Sidney Crosby was my whole world, and to have that taken away from you…it’s heartbreaking.

Chapter Three

Later that night, Sidney and I were in his basement playing some hockey. When he scored on me, I pretended to drop my gloves and get ready to fight him. He laughed and tackled me onto the couch.

“I love you,” he said, then pressed his lips harshly against my forehead, and made his way down to my lips. “You’re heavy,” I laughed. “Sorry to interrupt,” said his dad Troy, chuckling softly, “But it’s time to eat.” Sidney kissed me again, then stood up.

I followed him upstairs to eat, then Sidney walked me home. When I got there, my mom was waiting for me in the doorway. “Haley, we need to talk sweetie.” I cursed silently, but followed my mom into the kitchen. She sat down, and motioned for me to sit across from her.

I grabbed a bottle of water from the fridge in case I needed to take a sip to avoid one of her questions. “Yeah?” I asked. “Honey, I want to talk to you about Sidney,” she said nervously. “What about him?” I asked. “Well, two things,” she bit her lip.

“I think I know what at least one of those things is, and it’ll be much more painful if you drag it out so let’s get this done with,” I huffed. “Oh, alright. First, I want to make sure that you two are taking precautions. Please tell me you are,” she said.

“We don’t even need precautions at this point,” I said. “All teenagers think that. But you never know,” she said uncomfortably. “No, really. We’re taking the biggest precaution there is…” I said, looking down.

“Honey, birth control is not 100% effective. You know that, right?” she asked. “Oh my God, Mom. You aren’t getting this. Sidney and I haven’t…done that yet. Believe me I think it’s going to be awhile before you have to worry,” I said, crossing my arms. “Oh, well…your father will be happy to hear that,” she said.

I slammed my head down on the table. “So that’s what you and Dad have conversations about?” I asked into the wood. “Well, it comes up occasionally. You are our daughter, you know,” she said. I shook my head.

"Alright, well that’s over. What else did you need to talk to me about?” I asked. “Here goes,” Mom said. “Honey…have you ever thought about maybe dating someone else for a change?” I quickly unscrewed the cap to my water bottle.

“No,” I said after taking a sip. “I just…don’t want you held down to him. I want you to experience other things before you just settle down. I think you’ll regret it if you don’t. There are so many other boys out there, why not give them a chance?” she asked. “Oh, I dunno maybe because they’re all disgusting PIGS,” I snapped.

“Mom, I love Sidney. More than I can even explain, and there’s no way I’m going to let that go. Maybe you don’t understand, but there’s something about him. And after loving someone for ten years, you can’t just “date around” with other people. Do you know how hard that would be, Mom? To just all of the sudden just…leave him, and start seeing some guy I don’t even care about. He’d hate me, and there’s no way I’d ever risk that. Sorry, but no. Are we done here?” I didn’t wait for her answer before I got up from the table.

Chapter Two

For the rest of the summer, we went on our nightly walks. He even started coming over to my house, and I went to his. We started spending every day together. He would come over at noon, leave at four to practice and eat, then we would go on our walk.

Things weren’t even really that awkward anymore. On the last night of summer, everything was going as usual. He stopped in the middle of the road. “Can I tell you something?” he asked. “Sure,“ I shrugged. “I think I like you,” he said. “What?” I asked.

“I don’t know, I--I like you. I mean, you’re funny. And you’re not like…girly,” he said looking at his feet. “Uh…I like you too,” I said. “Ah, who am I kidding? I’ve always liked you.” His face turned bright red. “I think you’re pretty,” he said, blushing. I smiled.

“Uh,” he said, and grabbed my hand quickly, then let it go. “Sorry,” he said. I shook my head, and grabbed his hand. “I don’t mind,” I said. “Oh,” he said. “Yeah,” I laughed. He walked me home, and didn’t let go of my hand once. “So are you my girlfriend now?” he asked when we got to my driveway.

“I don’t know. Do you want me to be?” I asked, feeling my face burn up. “What kind of a stupid question is that?” he asked. I shrugged. “So is that a yes?” he asked. “Yeah,” I said. “Ok,” he whispered.

“Bye Sid,” I smiled. “Bye,” he said. He started walking away, then turned back around again. He came up to me, and awkwardly put his face close to mine. I finished off the distance, and I experienced that magical moment when your lips touch another‘s for the first time. “Ok, bye.” He said, embarrassed. I smiled and walked up my driveway in a daze.

School started, but other than that nothing else really changed. Sid and I were still spending most of our time together. And so life went on, and we stayed as close as ever. Our relationship stayed at the cute, summer-love stage until about 11th grade. That’s when the pressure started.

“Come on, Sid. You’ve been datin’ her for almost five years. Make her bed rock, buddy!” said Brett Caswell, a boy in our grade. “How ‘bout you shut your fucking mouth?” Sidney said and walked away with his hand in mine.

“I’m sorry, I know you hate that,” he said. I shook my head. “I--I don’t know. Do you think we…should? Just to get it over with? It would shut them up.” I asked. “No. Why should we give in to those pussies? I would hate to do that just because people told us to. It’s our choice, and we’ll do it when we’re ready,” he said.

I nodded. “Why don’t you want to?” I asked. “I mean, they have a point. Five years is a long time. I just feel like…you don’t want it to be with me,” I said. He stopped and turned towards me.

“Haley, of course I want to. But it should be when we want it to be, not when they do. Last time I checked, this was our relationship. I want it to be special for us, and I know we’ll both regret it if we do it when we aren’t ready. Because then when we are ready, it won’t be as great. Please don’t doubt yourself. I love you more than anything. And you have no reason at all to be worried, I wouldn’t want it to be with anyone but you,” he said and kissed me. “Hey, that’s a start!” Brett said. Sidney slammed his fists against a locker. “Shut up!”

Chapter One

He had never really paid much attention to me, but that changed soon enough. The summer before 6th grade, my family moved across town. We had lived there for about three days, and my older sister Bridget and I decided to take a walk.

We had only gone a few houses down, when I saw him. He was in his driveway practicing hockey with his dad. I tried to hide behind my sister. We were almost past his house when he saw me. “Hey Haley,” he said quietly. “Oh, uh hey Sidney,” I managed.

His dad said something to him, and he shook his head, but his dad pushed him toward me. “What are you doing here?” he asked. “We um, live here now. Just down the street,” I answered. “Oh,” he said. “Yeah,” I blurted.

“Well this is painfully awkward,” Bridget said. “Shut up,” I hissed. “Well, I have to go practice a little bit before it gets dark,” he said quietly. “Oh, yeah. Well I’ll see you at school I guess,” I said. “See ya,” he said.

This small talk continued for about two weeks. Every evening at about 7:00, Bridget and I would walk past his house. He would be practicing, and we would talk for about a minute. Then Bridget and I would be on our way.

After a few weeks, Bridget got tired of having to stop and talk to Sidney, so she stayed home. I didn’t know what Sidney would think if I didn’t show up, so I went alone that one night. Sure enough, he was waiting at the end of his driveway.

“Hi,” he said. “Hey,” I replied. “Why isn’t your sister walking with you?” he asked. “She doesn’t want to anymore,” I said. “Oh,” he said. “Yeah,” I sighed. “Well I could walk with you if you don’t want to go alone,” he shrugged. “You don’t have to do that,” I shook my head.

“No, I want to,” he said. “Ok,” I said. He tossed his stick into the yard and yelled to his mom that he was going on a walk. We didn’t talk much in that half an hour, but he accidentally brushed up against me three times which made up for it. When we reached his house, I waited for him to head up his driveway, but he kept walking.

“Sidney isn’t your house right here?” I asked. “Yeah, but yours is down there isn’t it?” he answered. I paused for a second, and then nodded. We walked the hundred or so feet to my house. “Bye,” he said shyly. “Um, bye. Thanks for walking with me,” I said. “Your welcome. I’ll see you tomorrow.”

How it Started

Have you ever loved a song before it became popular? No one shared your passion for it, it was your song. Then all of the sudden, it became a megahit? And then that song belonged to not only you, but everyone else too.

At first, you were happy that it got the attention that it deserved, but then you get annoyed that it’s not just yours anymore. You want it to yourself again.

Well, that’s what happened to me. Only this story has nothing to do with a song, it’s about a boy. Just a regular, ordinary boy with a great talent for hockey. You’ve probably heard of him. His name is Sidney Crosby.

I met him the first day of second grade. He walked into Mrs. Kovinski’s room silently and the teacher directed him to his seat, which was across from mine. I studied his dark curly brown hair and golden brown eyes for a second.

“Hi,” I said when he sat down. “Hi,” he answered, looking down. “What’s your name?” I asked. “Sidney,” he said. “No it isn’t,” I laughed. “Yeah it is,” he crossed his arms.

“But that’s a girl name!” I giggled. Even then, he never had a temper. “I’m a boy, and it’s my name too,” he said calmly. “Well…I like it. And my name’s Haley,” I said. “Oh,” he nodded. “Yeah,” I sighed. And just like that, I fell in love.
